I’m Ruby McGrath, 24 year old crochet designer and owner of Frank&Olive Crochet. I taught myself to crochet whilst pregnant with my now 3 year old daughter, Olive. I wanted to be able to make my new baby something special that would be treasured, and be able to dress her in a way that I felt expressed us best – I was always pretty unimpressed with the Highstreet baby fashion. I soon discovered that I had a real passion for crochet, and began creating my own designs (never one to follow instructions!). Friends and family started to ask me to makethem things, until suddenly I found that people I didn’t know were stopping me in the street to admire my wares and asking to place an order. I decided to create a website and Facebook page to meet demand and enable people to contact me – and I have never looked back.
Three years on, and another baby later, Frank&Olive is a recognis
ed brand with a worldwide following and customer base. I still design and make original, luxurious and contemporary crochet, from children’s and women’s clothing to home and textiles – only now with the help of a very talented and dedicated team, to ensure we can meet with the demand. All of my designs are handmade using the very best quality, luxury designer yarns which are 100% British wool where possible. I feel incredibly lucky that I am fulfilling my dream whilst supporting my family, working alongside my bestfriend Kimberley and not having to miss a moment of my little ones growing up.
My aim is to make crochet relevant and stylish for today’s market. Transforming the existing expectations and visions of 70’s, garish crochet into something modern, trendy and very wearable. My designs are bold, bright and flattering, and are quickly moving from just a handmade clothing range, to a recognised luxury handmade fashion label. Fromthe children’s dresses to the women’s jumpers to the luxurious blankets and throws, Frank&Olive is quirky, stylish and in a whole range of gorgeous, on-trend colours.
I also design for best selling magazines, such as Simply Crochet, Inside Crochet and Mollie Makes, as well as a number of top yarn companies and trendy shops in London. My designs have also made the front cover of Inside Crochet – You can buy my patterns in the ‘Frank&Olive Crochet’ Etsy shop!
Until recently, I have run regular exclusive crochet workshops – as seen on Kirstie’s Handmade Britain and in Mollie Makes magazine – and have delivered a number of them for Baa Ram Ewe, The Button Tin, Folksy and Mollie Makes Magazine. I was even recently named ‘The Crochet Queen’ by Folksy and asked to teach crochet with Mollie Makes at Kirstie Allsopp’s The Handmade Fair! But with the birth of my second baby, Frank, I have taken a little step back from tutoring and expanded the business to deliver workshops countrywide, hosted by some of the country’s top crochet tutors.
Due to the success of Frank&Olive, and with my wonderful friend Kimberley on board, we are now launching our Luxury Crochet Retreats, which we are very excited about!
In association with Mollie Makes, sponsored by the very biggest of names including Rowan, King Cole, DMC and Wool And The Gang, and boasting some very special guests, the retreats are set to be an unmissable experience for all crafters – crocheters or not! The first dates sold out in record time so we have now announced even more dates to meet demand. We hope to see you there! You can read more about them on the Mollie Makes blog: http://www.molliemakes.com/inspiration/luxury-crochet-retreat-frank-olive/
